Hacking from China – Maybe

China-based hackers are at it again.  Since Google fled to Hong Kong to escape being attacked in mainland China, the virtual ghosts slipped into the Dalai Lama’s office and sucked up 1,500 e-mails. I wonder what they discovered.

Researchers at the University of Toronto traced the hackers to the city of Chengdu but didn’t blame China or demand answers as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did when Google was hacked.  The Canadians said there is no evidence of involvement by the Chinese government.

Instead, the evidence points to a cyber-spy network that has hacked into government and private organization in 103 countries.

It is estimated that close to four hundred million Chinese are connected to the Internet.  In 2008, China required Internet cafes in Beijing to take the photographs of anyone using the Internet as a mean to control public use of cyberspace. Could that also mean discovering who is doing the hacking?

Since the Chinese government does not like to be embarrassed, I’m sure they want to stop the amateurs who keep being traced back to China. Then again, some group in another country, like Germany, could be routing the signal through China.

Every single time someone in the world hacks into a government or company network, the finger of blame is always pointed at China.

    • I have written about this topic before on this site last year. Since China has more people hooked up to the Internet than any country this means a higher rate of a possibility of hacking from China but that does not mean that China’s government is always behind it. In addition, hackers in other countries such as Germany and Iran have been known to use proxies in other countries such as China to hide their trail.

The US also has hackers that break into the sites of other countries. Some of it comes from individuals that may be criminals or just out to have fun. However, the US also has units in the CIA and the DIA that hack into the databases of other countries. Hacking is a two-way highway with many types involved all over the world for many different reasons.

The Western media had a habit of to always point a finger at China as if China’s government is behind this sort of hacking.

China makes a good target for the Western media — since there are so many Sinophobics in the West and especially America this means there is a ready target hungry for this sort of story even if it may not be true.

This type of reaction could just be Yellow Journalism to sell copy and raise revenues through audience share and advertising prides.

In a capitalist society, it is all about the money and the truth be damned.
